Office of the Day is a semi-regular series on my favorite places to work I find around the world. Since running this website, and my associated social networks, require an internet connection, I am constantly on the lookout for wifi-enabled hotspots with good food, good drinks, and a view.

I’m writing this post from the sunny and breezy Esplanade in Cairns, Australia. Today was supposed to be absolutely awful, with the weather app on my phone predicting a 100% chance of rain! This was because of Cyclone Nathan barreling down on the northern Queensland coast with internal wind speeds of over 200km/hr. Thankfully, at the last possible moment, the storm shifted northward and I was able to escape my hostel for some time in the sun.

I need to build up a good base tan as my next several stops are all coastal and island beaches and I’m ghastly white with having left the United States in the dead of winter!

Only downside seems to be a minuscule 100MB cap on daily wifi use which I hit within minutes of connecting to the town network. I’ll be uploading this story over my cell connection instead.

  1. I probably wouldn’t get much work done in that beautiful spot. I’m glad yoi were spared from a full hit of the cyclone.

    • Sorry about the typo. I’ve been sick and my eyes must not have been focused yet.

  4. I remember this like it was yesterday. We have had a great run since then of awesome weather and now it looks like we are swinging back into the crazy weather. They are predicting 3 or 4 cyclones this summer!
