Christchurch Cardboard Cathedral

Featured Photos is a series highlighting interesting or cool things I encounter on my travels.

This week’s photo is from the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand. After devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 that killed over 150 people, the city and much of its buildings were left in ruins. This including the central cathedral that was built between 1864 and 1904. The bell tower, rose window, and much of the front half of the church were completely destroyed.

Designed to be a transitional building while repairs are ongoing at the old site, the Cardboard Cathedral is the current home of the church community. It was designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and is intended to stand for 50+ years.
