My friends and I got majorly lucky upon our arrival in Paris in May 2012. We hadn’t made any plans for housing like the rest of our trip, but I was particularly worried that this would be an issue in Paris with its reputation for being such an expensive city. My friend Matt had been here before and assured both Michael and I that there wouldn’t be any problem, trust him.

We stumbled out of the train station and chose a direction to walk. A couple of kilometers on, we happened upon an area with quite a few hotels. We popped into one and found out that there was a big conference in town booking up nearly every bed! But the hotel owner knew a lady that might have an opening.

We crossed the street to her friend’s place and headed in. Behind the counter sat an old French woman who didn’t speak a lick of English (and we definitely couldn’t speak French). After leaning heavily on my Charades skills, she walked us up to our $25 per person per night flat! And oh man did it have one hell of a view!
